Trauma Informed Youth Mentor & Life Coach

Laura Darby MSc, SMACCPH, MAC, FdA.

Hi!– I’m Laura, a Trauma-Informed Youth Mentor & Life Coach specialising in offering support in Youth Mental Health First Aid, Relationship Guidance, Youth Mentoring & Coaching, and Trauma.

From the young age of 19 I took on responsible jobs, starting with caring for a four year old child at weekends whilst working at a Children’s Centre. In the five years was there, I progressed from volunteer to Senior Family Support Worker. I also worked at a different Children’s Centre as well as this one to vary my experience. I had my first experiences of working in the safeguarding arena, working in a multi-agency environment and really making a difference to families lives. I trained in many parenting programmes and led many parent and toddler and support groups. Whilst here, I achieved my Foundation Degree in Management of Care and the foundations of my counselling qualifications, progressing to completing a Postgraduate Certificate in Person Centred Counselling.

In 2014, I was employed in a Child Protection role within a Safeguarding Command. I trained in various different topics including; abuse, attachment and exploitation. This role started to open my eyes to how few services there are out there for young people to access that don’t have a waiting list or certain criteria to meet. In 2017, I was successful in securing a role at the Sexual Assault Referral Centre as an Independent Sexual Violence Adviser. Whilst in this role I have taken the opportunity to develop my skill set completing a Master of Science in Psychology and Law, an introductory course in Family Therapy amongst other short courses including self harm, healthy relationships, sexual and domestic violence, drugs, emotions, mental health first aid, pre-trial therapy and the criminal justice system.

My understanding of the criminal justice system has been strengthened by taking a Youth Justice Instructor role with Norfolk County Council part time which involved me working with young people in the system, delivering knowledge based sessions to them regarding different topic areas such as exploitation, prisons, sexual health etc. This role showed me first hand how these types of knowledge sessions can really help young people. Combining my experience in this role and as an ISVA, as well as my skills and qualifications I believe I can offer a high quality service. I fell pregnant in 2019 and whilst on maternity leave, I completed training to become a Youth Mentor and specialist training in Trauma and EMDR therapy.
